The Flag, The Funding, and the Failure: Why Mai Vang's Run for Congress Matters

If you want to understand the current state of California politics, look no further than Sacramento.

The city is a microcosm of the broader failures we see across the state: skyrocketing costs of living, unbearable gas prices, and policies that seem entirely disconnected from the reality of everyday working Americans. Yet, instead of tackling these tangible problems, some of our most prominent politicians are busy fighting symbolic wars against the very country they serve.

Take Mai Vang, for example.

Currently serving as a Sacramento City Councilmember representing District 8, Vang is now making a serious bid for the U.S. Congress, challenging 20-year incumbent Doris Matsui for California's 7th District. But before voters hand her the keys to federal office, they need to look closely at how she conducts herself on the local level.

Refusing the Pledge

It is a documented fact: Mai Vang consistently refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during Sacramento City Council meetings.

This isn't a one-off protest or an accidental omission. It is a sustained refusal to honor the American flag. The Democratic Party constantly asks the American people to vote and participate in our "Democracy," yet prominent figures within their own ranks cannot bring themselves to observe the most basic standard of civic respect.

If someone is willing to turn their back on the American flag while serving on a city council, imagine the policies they will support if they become the next member of Congress representing the capital region.

This is exactly why the Democratic brand is struggling so heavily with everyday citizens in 2026. The modern political Left—especially in California—has cultivated a reputation of lacking basic pride in this country. Between prioritizing policies that benefit undocumented immigrants over citizens, unchecked spending, and failing to manage the basic logistics of a functioning state, they have shown a deep carelessness toward the American people.

A Civil War in District 7

The race between Vang and Matsui is a perfect example of a party eating itself.

Matsui represents the entrenched Democratic establishment. She is backed by Governor Gavin Newsom and funded heavily by corporate Political Action Committees (PACs), having raised over $1.3 million. Vang represents the far-left, progressive wing, heavily backed by groups like the Working Families Party and Justice Democrats.

Their primary battlegrounds are telling:

  • Healthcare: Vang is aggressively pushing for a fully government-run "Medicare for All" system, attacking Matsui for accepting corporate healthcare money.

  • Foreign Policy: Vang has heavily criticized Matsui for taking campaign funds from AIPAC, forcing the 20-year incumbent onto the defensive regarding Middle Eastern policy.

The Reality for the Voter

While Vang attacks Matsui's corporate funding, the alternative she offers is a hard shift further to the Left.

Vang’s history on the city council includes prioritizing symbolic progressive actions—such as mandating "Land Acknowledgements" before the very Pledge of Allegiance she refuses to say—and supporting costly project labor agreements. These are the kinds of policies that drive up the cost of local governance, resulting in the massive deficits and high taxes that are suffocating California residents.

It is hard to argue that the Democratic Party has instituted any changes for the better in recent years. But looking at the race for the 7th District, the choice is between the corporate status quo and an even more radical progressive agenda.

Your vote does matter. Don’t think it doesn’t. If you live in Northern California, pay attention to these local races. The people who refuse to respect the flag today are the ones writing your tax policies tomorrow.
